Land Trust Accreditation

In 2010, as they were preparing to embark on the process to achieve Land Trust Accreditation, the Green Spaces Alliance of South Texas (GSA) turned to MAYES | WILSON & ASSOCIATES to facilitate the process.

The land trust had been through recent staff changes, including Susan Hughes stepping into the Executive Director position, and the timing was critical for the organization. MWA’s first step included undertaking the pre-application organizational assessment.

“MWA stepped in during a time crunch, willing and able to complete a credible and meaningful Standards and Practices assessment within the short time frame we had to comply with the terms of our grant,” said Hughes. “Not only was this assessment a requirement of our pre-application, it served as a helpful, informative tool for me in my new position.”

When it was time to move forward with the preparation of GSA’s Land Trust Accreditation application, the organization very quickly realized they needed a guide for the complex process, and once again called on MWA.

“Frankly, we weren’t even entirely sure what was being asked in some parts of the application,” said Hughes. “Having someone familiar with the accreditation process, as well as with more intense land trust operational experience, was invaluable.”

MWA focused heavily on organizing the process. This included determining what content and documentation was needed and in what format, as well as preparing all materials to meet application requirements. Perhaps most importantly, according to Hughes, was Sara Wilson’s role as head cheerleader and the confidence she inspired by spearheading and streamlining the whole effort.

“In February of 2013 when we learned we had been granted accreditation, no one was more thrilled for us than Sara,” said Hughes. “She was an integral part of our team, a valued friend, and someone we will always consider a resource for any organizational challenge, large or small.”
