Susan has multi-dimensional experience as a nonprofit executive director, board member, and business owner. In addition to her work on all of our written publications, I routinely tap Susan’s knowledge in finance, marketing, and nonprofit management.
Susan Barnett is a creative entrepreneur with expertise in nonprofit management, research, writing, and the arts. She has worked with MAYES | WILSON since 2009 as a writer, editor, data analyst, and associate consultant, working behind the scenes to develop training manuals, presentations, and articles, and contributing to client reports. She has two decades of experience working with nonprofit organizations in roles that include chief executive, board director, volunteer, treasurer, membership/marketing coordinator, project manager, web master and consultant. She has also worked in the private sector, founding a retail business and managing it for 14 years
In 2014, Susan co-authored Arts Industry: Collaboration and Revelation, a publication of the John Michael Kohler Arts Center. She also worked at BoardStar, where she managed membership, wrote and designed marketing materials, wrote an electronic newsletter, maintained the website, and designed and edited educational materials on nonprofit governance.
An artist, cellist, and photographer, Susan earned a BA in Fine Art from Montana State University and an MA in Art History from UW-Milwaukee. She spends most of her free time outdoors: gardening, kayaking, biking, and photographing the intersection of rural and urban life.
