Strategic Planning

SITUATION | Gathering Waters Wisconsin’s Alliance for Land Trusts helps land trusts, landowners, and communities protect the places that make the state special. The organization turned to MAYES | WILSON & ASSOCIATES, LLC to facilitate a strategic planning process.

TASK | The challenge faced by Gathering Waters was how to transition from a staff-led strategic planning process to a board-driven effort.

ACTION | The MWA team worked with Gathering Waters to establish a strategic planning task group comprised mostly of board members, helping staff and board members identify and fulfill specific roles throughout the planning process. In addition to facilitating the process, MWA provided support and direction throughout the development of the organization’s strategic plan.

“We feel the plan is a really strong and relevant compass for us,” said DeKok. “More intangibly, the planning process MWA designed and led served us well in better engaging our board, so it was a big step in the progression of better and deeper board engagement.”

RESULT | The result was a strategic planning process that engaged the board in their role of setting the organization’s strategic direction while also engaging the staff for input about the future.
